What Is a Hormel Pennant?

In the early 1950s, collecting was a nationwide craze — from baseball cards to comic books. In 1953, the Hormel Foods Company launched a creative promotion by attaching over five million wool felt pennants representing 95 universities to cans of soup using rubber bands.

These small felt pennants were advertised in comic books and sold in grocery stores across the country. Today, surviving examples are increasingly rare and sought after by collectors.
