In the early 1950s, collecting was a national craze — baseball cards, comic books, stamps, and more. In 1953, the Hormel Foods Company launched a creative promotion by attaching over five million wool felt pennants representing 95 different universities to cans of soup using rubber bands.

Advertised in comic books and grocery stores across the country, these small felt pennants quickly became treasured keepsakes. Today, very few survive in collectible condition.
